Assam Records Over 6 Crore Tourist Arrivals in Last Decade

New Delhi, India Jul 14, 2026 ALN: As the Assam government pushes eco-tourism initiatives and seeks to capitalise on rising tourist footfall, the state recorded more than six crore tourist arrivals, including over 2.4 lakh foreign visitors, during the last 10 years.

Replying to a question by Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed during the Budget Session on Tuesday, Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog informed the Assembly that a total of 6,04,85,638 tourists visited Assam between 2016-17 and 2025-26, of whom 2,41,192 were foreign nationals.

Neog added that the highest tourist footfall was recorded in 2022-23, when 98,31,141 visitors, including 18,946 foreign tourists, travelled to the state in the post-pandemic period.

In contrast, tourist arrivals fell sharply during the COVID-19 pandemic, with 2020-21 recording the lowest footfall of 13,52,037 visitors, including just 347 foreign tourists, she said.

The tourism sector in Assam has seen a remarkable recovery since the pandemic, with the state witnessing a significant increase in visitor numbers as travel restrictions eased and confidence in travel returned. The spike in tourist arrivals in 2022-23 illustrates a growing interest in the region, which is known for its rich biodiversity, cultural heritage, and unique traditions.

Neog informed the House that tourists from countries such as the United Kingdom, France, the UAE, Australia, the United States, Switzerland, Nepal, Bangladesh, Canada, Sri Lanka, Japan, Spain, Belgium, and Israel accounted for a significant share of foreign arrivals to Assam. This diverse influx of visitors indicates Assam's expanding appeal as a travel destination, drawing interest from both neighboring and distant countries.

She further stated that Australia, Japan, and 27 European Union countries have recently revised their travel advisories relating to Assam following considerable improvement in the state's law and order situation. This shift in advisories is a crucial development, as it reflects enhanced perceptions of safety and stability in Assam, which is essential for attracting foreign tourists.
