Next Bharat Ventures, supported by Suzuki, launches a Rs 2,000 crore fund to invest in startups focused on improving quality of life in India.

Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation-backed Next Bharat Ventures IFSC Pvt Ltd has announced the launch of its second fund of Rs 2,000 crore, aimed to support startups across sectors, including agriculture, financial inclusion, healthcare, and AI for social good in India. This initiative is part of a broader trend where venture capital is increasingly being directed towards impact-driven enterprises that aim to address pressing social challenges while also generating financial returns.

Next Bharat Ventures, which was established to focus on impact investments in India, has already made significant strides with its first fund of Rs 340 crore. This initial fund successfully invested in over 20 impact organizations, demonstrating the viability and importance of supporting startups that are committed to making a difference in society. The new fund will build on this foundation, allowing the firm to deepen its engagement with startups that are working to improve the quality of life for underserved communities.

The second fund will primarily be financed by Suzuki Motor Corporation, which will act as the anchor Limited Partner (LP). However, the firm plans to raise additional capital from various corporations in Japan. Vipul Jindal Nath, the Founder and CEO of Next Bharat Ventures, stated that the decision to source most of the funds from Japanese institutions stems from a belief that these investors tend to be more patient and supportive in their investment approach.

When discussing the sectors targeted for investment, Nath emphasized the importance of focusing on areas where startups can enhance the quality of life for local communities in rural India, as well as in Tier II and III towns, and even in larger cities. This includes sectors such as agriculture, agritech, healthcare, healthtech, and livelihood initiatives aimed at supporting informal and gig economy workers. These sectors are critical in a country like India, where a significant portion of the population relies on agriculture and informal work for their livelihoods.

Nath elaborated that the Rs 2,000 crore will be deployed over the next three to four years, allowing ample time for the selected startups to grow and achieve their impact goals. He noted that unlike a typical venture capital fund, which often operates on a 12-year cycle, Next Bharat Ventures has a longer fund cycle of 15 years. This extended timeframe reflects the nature of the investments being made, which often require more time to realize their full potential, particularly in sectors where social impact is a core objective.

This second corpus will enable Next Bharat Ventures to significantly expand its support towards "impact entrepreneurs" who are dedicated to improving quality of life and sustainable livelihoods across rural India and among marginalized urban communities. The firm aims to empower these entrepreneurs by providing them with the necessary resources and mentorship to scale their solutions effectively.

Commenting on the launch of the new fund, Suzuki Motor Corporation Representative Director & President Toshihiro Suzuki remarked on the longstanding relationship between Japan and India, highlighting a shared belief in India's potential. He noted that this partnership has been evident over the past four decades, during which Suzuki has not only contributed to the automotive sector but has also fostered entrepreneurship and job creation across various industries.

According to Suzuki, the legacy of this investment is not limited to the cars produced but extends to the enterprises that have emerged as a result of this collaboration. He pointed out that many ordinary shops have evolved into major dealerships, repair workshops have developed into auto-parts suppliers, and single suppliers have given rise to entire Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) ecosystems. This ecosystem approach has created an estimated 3,000-plus entrepreneurs across India, each contributing to local job creation and income generation.

With the launch of Fund II, Suzuki expressed a commitment to deepening this partnership and contributing to the Government of India's vision of a self-reliant India, or Atmanirbhar Bharat. This aligns with broader national goals of fostering entrepreneurship and innovation as a means of driving economic growth and social development.

Next Bharat Ventures has a track record of investing in various rural startups that exemplify the impact investing ethos. Some of the notable investments include MeMeraki, an authentic Indian folk art marketplace that promotes local artisans; E-Bik, a rural mobility brand that provides affordable e-mobility kits for cycles and rickshaws; SGB Agro, a brand focused on affordable mechanization solutions for small-holding farmers; and Atypical Advantage, which is recognized as India's largest platform for providing livelihood opportunities for persons with disabilities (PwD).

The impact of these investments is significant, as they not only provide financial returns but also contribute to social and economic upliftment in rural and marginalized urban communities. By supporting startups that address critical needs such as access to healthcare, sustainable agriculture, and livelihood opportunities, Next Bharat Ventures is playing a vital role in fostering inclusive growth in India.

The launch of the Rs 2,000 crore impact fund comes at a time when there is a growing recognition of the importance of impact investing in addressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability. Investors are increasingly looking for opportunities that align with their values and contribute to positive social outcomes, making initiatives like those from Next Bharat Ventures particularly relevant in today's investment landscape.

In summary, the announcement of the new fund by Next Bharat Ventures marks a significant step in advancing impact investing in India. With a clear focus on supporting startups that aim to improve the quality of life for local communities, the fund is poised to make a meaningful contribution to India's socioeconomic development. As the venture capital landscape continues to evolve, the emphasis on impact-driven investments is likely to grow, paving the way for more innovative solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing society today.
