A state-level Pre-Subroto Tournament U-17 (Girls) commenced today at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima, featuring seven teams from various regions of the state. This tournament is part of a broader initiative to promote youth sports and develop talent at the grassroots level, particularly in football, which has been gaining popularity across India.
The participating teams include Livingstone Higher Secondary School Dimapur, Government Higher Secondary School Hakushang, Tuensang, PM Shree GHS Meriema, Kohima, Cornerstone Higher Secondary School Zunheboto, Government High School Molvom, Chumoukedima, Government High School Noklak village, and Government Middle School Imrong, Mokokchung. Each of these schools represents a unique community, bringing together young athletes who share a passion for football.
The tournament was officially inaugurated by Anthony Ngullie, IAS, Secretary of the Department of Youth Resources & Sports. In his address, Ngullie emphasized the department's commitment to nurturing young talent through a series of tournaments across different sports disciplines. He highlighted the importance of such events in not only developing sports skills but also in promoting teamwork, discipline, and perseverance among the youth.
Ngullie noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently acknowledged grassroots football initiatives during his “Mann Ki Baat” program, specifically highlighting the Baby League and Women Futsal League as vital in promoting football. This recognition from the highest level of government underscores the significance of grassroots sports development in India and the potential benefits it can bring to young athletes.
He urged the department to continue its efforts in fostering youth development and expressed gratitude to the Football Association (NFA) for its ongoing support. The collaboration between government bodies and sports associations is crucial for the successful organization of such tournaments, ensuring that young athletes have opportunities to showcase their skills and compete at higher levels.
Jakedovo Chase, Joint Director of the Department of Youth Resources & Sports, shared insights about the Subroto Cup, one of Asia’s oldest inter-school football tournaments, established in 1960 under the auspices of the Indian Air Force. The tournament has a rich history and has evolved significantly since its inception, reflecting the growing interest in football among school-aged children across the country.
The tournament was conceptualized in 1958 by Air Marshal Subroto Mukherjee, India’s first Chief of Air Staff and a passionate football enthusiast. Following his untimely death in 1960, the tournament was initiated in his honor, supported by then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, starting with just 50 teams. Over the decades, it has expanded dramatically, now featuring hundreds of schools from across India and beyond.
In 2001, the tournament was renamed the Subroto International Football Tournament, attracting schools from various countries annually. This international aspect not only raises the level of competition but also provides Indian students with exposure to different playing styles and cultures. Chase mentioned that the state has performed remarkably in this tournament over the years, showcasing the talent and potential of young athletes from the region.
This year, the government and the department have decided to participate in two categories: Under 17 years for both boys and girls. The qualifying rounds saw 17 districts divided into four zones, with the top two teams from each section qualifying for the state-level tournament. This structured approach ensures that the best teams are selected to represent the state, enhancing the competitiveness of the tournament.
The winning teams in both categories will represent the state in the final leg of the 65th edition of the Subroto Mukherjee International Football Tournament, scheduled to take place from August 18 to September 25 in New Delhi. Participation in such a prestigious tournament can be a life-changing opportunity for young athletes, potentially leading to scholarships, professional contracts, and further development in their sporting careers.
Khriehutuo Tsira, a senior state sports coach from the Department of Youth Resources & Sports, highlighted that this tournament is not solely about winning but also about showcasing talent, building character, and fostering the true spirit of sportsmanship. The program was chaired by Kethosituo Sekhose, Director of the Department of Youth Resources & Sports. Naroenla, a Youth Resources & Sports Officer, administered the oath to the participating teams, reinforcing the commitment to fair play and sportsmanship. Vikhoto Zao, Associate Pastor of PCRC, invoked blessings, while Neila Thaprii presented a special number, adding a cultural element to the event. NFA President K Neibou Sekhose was also present at the inaugural event, illustrating the collaborative effort between various stakeholders in promoting youth sports.
The tournament will continue until July 16, providing young athletes with the opportunity to compete, learn, and grow in a supportive environment.
