Puri King Seeks Centre’s Intervention After ISKCON Rejects Plea On Overseas Rath Yatra Dates

New Delhi, India Jul 11, 2026 ALN: Bhubaneswar: Puri’s titular king, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, has expressed his intention to seek intervention from the Central government following ISKCON's refusal to adjust the dates of overseas Rath Yatra celebrations to align with the traditional festival calendar of Puri. This decision has raised concerns regarding the adherence to established traditions and scriptures.

The Rath Yatra, or Chariot Festival, is one of the most significant religious events in Hinduism, particularly for the followers of Lord Jagannath, who is worshipped as a form of Lord Krishna. The festival is celebrated annually in Puri, Odisha, where the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are taken out of the Jagannath Temple in massive chariots and paraded through the streets, allowing devotees to participate in the festivities. This event is deeply rooted in tradition, with specific dates determined by the lunar calendar, and it attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists from around the world.

Deb voiced his apprehensions regarding ISKCON's practice of organizing Rath Yatra celebrations abroad throughout the year. He stated that he had personally reached out to the new ISKCON chairman on July 4 of this year, addressing the deviations from the established traditions. “I once again wrote to the new ISKCON chairman, drawing his attention that ISKCON GBC has already decided that Snana Yatra, the Lord’s birthday, is to be celebrated on the specific tithi, and that is not being done. It is a breach of our Sanatana Vaidika Dharma that you are taking the Moola Vigraha out of the temple when you are not supposed to take Him out,” Deb was quoted as saying. This statement underscores the traditional belief that the sanctity of the deities should be maintained according to established rituals and timings.

Despite his efforts, ISKCON has communicated that it will not reconsider its decision regarding the organization of Rath Yatra celebrations outside India throughout the year. Deb noted, “On the 7th of July, ISKCON Governing Body Commission gave us the reply that so far as Rath Yatra outside India is concerned, there is no further discussion which is required and they stick to their decision of organizing Rath Yatra around the year in various countries outside India.” This firm stance by ISKCON has sparked a debate about the authenticity and integrity of the rituals as practiced by the organization outside India compared to the original traditions followed in Puri.

In light of ISKCON's stance, the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee has decided to escalate the matter to the Central government after consulting with the Odisha government. Deb stated, “Jagannath Temple Managing Committee, in consultation with the state government, is set to bring the matter to the notice of the Central Government.” This indicates a significant escalation in the conflict, as the temple committee seeks higher intervention to address what they perceive as a threat to their religious traditions.

Furthermore, Deb revealed that when the ISKCON GBC chairman made the initial decision on October 19, 2025, he promptly informed the Prime Minister through a letter. He also mentioned that he personally met the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan on April 20, 2026, to submit their representation and explain the situation. This level of engagement with top government officials illustrates the seriousness with which the temple authorities regard the issue.
