Heavy Rain Forces Suspension of Amarnath and Vaishno Devi Yatras

Imphal, India Jul 19, 2026 ALN: Srinagar/Jammu, Jul 19: Pilgrimages to the Amarnath cave shrine in Kashmir, as well as the Mata Vaishno Devi and Shri Shiv Khori shrines in Jammu, have been suspended following the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast of widespread rainfall across the Union Territory over the next few days. This decision has been taken to ensure the safety of the pilgrims, as heavy rainfall can lead to hazardous conditions on the trekking routes and at the shrines themselves.

The Amarnath Yatra, an annual pilgrimage that attracts thousands of devotees from across India and abroad, has been halted on both the Pahalgam and Baltal routes. These routes are the primary access points for pilgrims making their way to the holy cave, which is believed to house a naturally occurring ice Shiva Lingam. Rain lashed several parts of Jammu and Kashmir early Sunday, while cloudbursts were reported in forest areas of Kashmir.
