Omar Abdullah Challenges BJP Leaders Over Statehood Promises

Leh, India Jul 12, 2026 ALN: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah launched a fierce critique against J&K BJP leaders during a rally in Jammu, questioning their motives in opposing the National Conference's (NC) efforts for the restoration of statehood. He accused them of conspiring to "prove the Prime Minister a liar" by not supporting the commitment made by PM Modi regarding statehood.

"They take digs at us for failing to fulfill our promises, yet they forget their own. The Prime Minister himself stated at his Katra rally that restoring statehood to J&K was not an ordinary commitment. Yeh Modi Ka Waada Hai (This is Modi's promise). I ask J&K BJP leaders why they are conspiring to prove their own Prime Minister a liar. Why?" CM Omar questioned during his address at Maharaja Hari Singh Park.

The issue of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir has been a contentious topic since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, which revoked the region's special status. This move was met with widespread criticism and concern over the loss of autonomy, leading to significant political upheaval. The restoration of statehood has since become a rallying cry for various political factions in the region, especially the National Conference, which has historically advocated for the rights and autonomy of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Omar Abdullah emphasized that while the BJP may attempt to discredit NC leaders, undermining the Prime Minister's words is unacceptable. "The Prime Minister's words should carry weight and respect. Yet, when we inquire about this commitment, we only receive vague responses about it being restored at an appropriate time," he stated. This highlights the ongoing tension between the BJP and the NC, as both parties seek to define their positions regarding the governance and future of Jammu and Kashmir.

CM Omar further probed whether this "appropriate time" was contingent upon the BJP regaining power. "If that’s the case, why wasn’t this communicated to the Supreme Court, which directed for the restoration as soon as possible? The BJP can announce in rallies that statehood will only be restored if they come to power. Then, the people of J&K can decide whether to elect them or not. Since that hasn’t happened, the people have not elected them, and they are punishing them by depriving them of statehood," he alleged. This assertion reflects a broader sentiment among the populace that the political decisions being made are influenced by electoral calculations rather than the welfare of the citizens.

He dismissed BJP's claims of not conspiring to undermine NC's power, referencing instances from Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Punjab, questioning the credibility of the BJP's assertions while they boast about their "Operation Lotus." This operation refers to the BJP's strategy of poaching opposition legislators to strengthen its own position in various states, raising questions about the ethical implications of such political maneuvers. Omar's critique suggests a perception that the BJP employs a dual standard in its political dealings, which could resonate with voters who are wary of political instability and opportunism.

CM Omar reiterated that the elected government was being stifled, asking, "What was the need to conduct elections if J&K is to be governed through Raj Bhawan?" This statement underscores the frustration felt by some political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir regarding the central government's governance style, which they perceive as undermining local autonomy. He also questioned why the people of Jammu were being punished despite giving 29 seats to the BJP, indicating a disconnect between the electorate's support and the government's actions.

Addressing BJP's criticism of NC's invitation to Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, he remarked, "BJP's leadership claims to have eradicated terrorism and separatist ideology in J&K. If there are no separatists, how can they label him as one? Who is lying?" This rhetorical question serves to challenge the BJP's narrative on security and separatism in Jammu and Kashmir, suggesting that the complexities of the region's political landscape cannot be easily simplified into binary categories of good and evil.

He provocatively asked, "If we cannot secure statehood by appealing to our leaders in the capital, should we protest outside (US President) Trump's residence?" This comment reflects a growing impatience among some political leaders and citizens regarding the lack of tangible progress toward restoring statehood and autonomy. The reference to international figures like the US President also suggests a desire for external intervention or support, highlighting the perceived urgency of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

CM Omar stated that the NC resorted to protests after peaceful efforts over the last 18 months failed to yield results regarding statehood. "We even accepted delimitation aimed at benefiting only the BJP and its allies. Our gentlemanliness should not be exploited, and silence should not be mistaken for weakness. We cannot wait any longer," he declared. This statement emphasizes the NC's commitment to fighting for the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, while also criticizing the BJP's actions as self-serving and detrimental to the region's interests.

The rally's objective, according to CM Omar, was to seek permission from the people to allow their representatives to travel to Delhi on July 20 to advocate for the restoration of statehood to J&K. "I've traveled from Srinagar to Jammu to seek this permission. As I made my way here early this morning, I saw many people heading to join this rally. Rest assured, the trust you have placed in us will never be broken. You will not be betrayed, and we will fulfill all promises made to you," he assured the crowd. This call for unity and action reflects a broader strategy of mobilizing public support to pressure the central government into addressing the demands for statehood and restoring democratic processes in Jammu and Kashmir.
