Deputy Chief Minister Urges Swift Restoration Efforts Following Floods in Rajouri

Leh, India Jul 23, 2026 ALN: Deputy Chief Minister, Surinder Choudhary, on Wednesday visited the flood-affected area of Bella in Rajouri to assess the ground situation following the recent flash floods. This visit comes in the wake of severe weather conditions that have led to sudden and intense rainfall, resulting in flash floods that have wreaked havoc in several districts across the region. The Deputy Chief Minister's proactive approach highlights the urgency of addressing the aftermath of such natural disasters, which can have long-lasting effects on communities and infrastructure.

During the visit, the Deputy Chief Minister interacted with the officers and field functionaries deployed on the spot. He directed them to expedite restoration works, including clearance of damaged road stretches and restoration of essential services, so that normalcy is restored at the earliest. The immediate focus on restoring transportation routes is critical, as these roads are vital for delivering aid and services to affected populations. The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized the importance of swift action to ensure that the community can begin to recover from the immediate impacts of the flooding.

Later, the Deputy Chief Minister chaired a review meeting in Rajouri to assess the progress of restoration works and emergency response measures following the recent flash floods. This meeting provided an opportunity for various departments to report on their activities and challenges in the aftermath of the disaster. The coordination between different agencies is crucial in such scenarios, as it enhances the efficiency of the response and ensures that resources are utilized effectively to meet the needs of the affected population.

The meeting was informed that the district administration, along with all line departments, has been undertaking rescue, relief, and restoration works on a war footing. It was reported that four persons were initially missing in the flash flood incident, of whom three bodies have been recovered, while search operations are continuing to trace the remaining missing person. The loss of life in such incidents is always tragic, and the ongoing search efforts underscore the commitment of the authorities to locate and assist those affected. Multi-agency rescue operations involving the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Police, Indian Army, and other departments are being carried out in close coordination, while the administration continues to work round the clock for the safety and welfare of the affected people.

Reviewing the status of infrastructure restoration, the Deputy Chief Minister directed the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to ensure proper drainage along NH-144A and expedite road works wherever progress is slow. The focus on scientific drainage management is essential to prevent future damage, as inadequate drainage systems can exacerbate the impact of heavy rains and lead to recurring flooding. This proactive approach to infrastructure development and maintenance is vital for the long-term resilience of the region against natural disasters.

The meeting was informed that 157 PMGSY (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana) roads were damaged due to the flash floods. Officers of the Public Works Department (PWD), PMGSY, and BRO were directed to restore connectivity on priority and ensure that all damaged public infrastructure is repaired at the earliest. The PMGSY program is crucial for enhancing rural connectivity, and restoring these roads will not only facilitate the movement of relief materials but also support the local economy by enabling access to markets and services.

Reviewing the Jal Shakti Department, the officers informed that 131 water supply schemes had been affected. Drinking water is presently being supplied through water tankers in affected areas until normal services are restored. Access to clean drinking water is a fundamental need, especially in the aftermath of a disaster, and the reliance on water tankers highlights the immediate challenges faced by the administration in ensuring public health and safety. It was further informed that of the 150 power feeders affected, all except 30 had been restored, and the remaining feeders would be made functional by the evening. The restoration of electricity is critical not only for the comfort and safety of residents but also for the functioning of emergency services and communication systems in the affected areas.

The Deputy Chief Minister also reviewed the availability of essential commodities and directed the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department to ensure there is no black marketing or hoarding. He instructed the officers to maintain an uninterrupted supply of ration and other essentials, particularly for stranded laborers and vulnerable families.
