The 'Gems of India Challenge' was launched in Lohit district to nurture grassroots digital creators and promote local culture and heritage.

TEZU, 29 Jul: The district-level ‘Gems of India Challenge – National Creator Initiative’ was launched at the conference hall of the Lohit deputy commissioner’s office here on Wednesday. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Indian government to support and uplift digital creators, particularly those at the grassroots level, who play a crucial role in shaping narratives around local culture and heritage.

The programme was attended by government officials and content creators from across Lohit district, marking a significant step in recognizing the importance of digital storytelling in contemporary society. As the world increasingly shifts towards digital platforms for information and entertainment, initiatives like these aim to harness the power of local creators to share their unique stories.

Addressing the participants, DIPRO Nyatum Doke delivered a presentation explaining the initiative’s objectives, participation guidelines, selection process, and opportunities available to digital content creators. Doke emphasized the importance of authenticity in storytelling, noting that the challenge is designed to encourage creators to tell engaging stories that reflect the culture, heritage, tourism potential, traditions, history, and distinctive achievements of their respective districts.

The Gems of India Challenge is a national initiative launched by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which aims to identify, nurture, and promote grassroots digital creators. This initiative is particularly significant as it seeks to empower local voices and provide them with a platform to reach wider audiences. It is built upon MyWAVES, the citizen-creator platform under the WAVES OTT, which enables citizens to create, upload, and showcase original content. This platform is instrumental in democratizing content creation, allowing anyone with a story to share it with the world.

Doke further informed that Lohit is among the states and union territories selected for the pilot phase of the challenge, indicating the government's commitment to fostering creativity across diverse regions. The selection of Lohit district highlights its rich cultural tapestry and the potential for digital creators to contribute to the narrative of India’s diverse heritage.

“Interested creators may submit original videos of one to three minutes through the MyWAVES section of the WAVES OTT platform. The submission window for the pilot phase will remain open from 1 August to 31 August, 2026,” Doke said. This timeline provides creators with ample opportunity to develop their content and engage with the themes of the challenge effectively.

During the programme, a short introductory video titled Gems of India – MyWAVES was screened, providing participants with a visual understanding of the initiative's goals and the type of content that is encouraged. This was followed by an interactive session, during which officials and content creators discussed the themes, technical requirements, and procedure for participation. Queries raised by the participants were also addressed, indicating a collaborative approach to the initiative.

Addressing the gathering, DC Kesang Ngurup Damo encouraged the content creators of the district to participate actively in the challenge. He articulated that “Lohit district possesses immense potential for creative storytelling through its diverse communities, traditional knowledge, festivals, natural beauty, historical places, and developmental achievements.” His remarks underscore the significance of local narratives in contributing to a broader understanding of India's multifaceted identity.

The deputy commissioner emphasized that digital platforms have created new opportunities for young people to present local stories before national and global audiences. In an era where digital consumption is at an all-time high, the ability to share authentic experiences and perspectives can foster greater understanding and appreciation of different cultures. He urged creators to produce responsible, original, and meaningful content that truthfully reflects the identity and aspirations of the district.

Outstanding creators will be recognized at the district, state, and national levels. The initiative provides for up to 20 district-level awards of Rs 50,000 each, while one selected creator from each district may compete for a state-level award of Rs 2 lakh. Selected state entries may subsequently compete for national awards of Rs 5 lakh each during the wider national rollout. This tiered recognition system not only incentivizes participation but also ensures that creators are motivated to produce high-quality content.

The pilot phase of the ‘Gems of India Challenge’ was launched also in Upper Siang district on Wednesday, indicating the initiative's reach and the government's commitment to promoting digital storytelling across various regions. During the launch programme held in the DC’s conference hall in Yingkiong, Assistant Commissioner (HQ) Binti Mibang urged the digital content creators of the district to showcase the district’s unique culture, traditions, natural beauty, and success stories in a positive and responsible manner. Her comments reflect an understanding of the potential impact that well-crafted digital narratives can have on community pride and tourism.

She said that quality digital content has the potential to project a positive image of the district and contribute to tourism promotion, cultural preservation, and public awareness. This highlights the multifaceted benefits of the initiative, as it not only serves to empower creators but also has broader implications for local economies and cultural heritage preservation.

ADTH Onam Darang Pertin stated that the initiative provides an opportunity for the youths, particularly aspiring digital content creators, to highlight the rich cultural heritage of Upper Siang. This sentiment resonates with the overarching goal of the Gems of India Challenge, which is to foster a sense of pride among young creators and encourage them to take ownership of their narratives.

Earlier, DIPRO Yalik Jerang highlighted the initiative’s objectives, themes, participation guidelines, and opportunities, ensuring that all participants had a clear understanding of the challenge. A promotional video on the Gems of India Challenge was also screened for the participants, serving as an additional resource to inspire and guide potential creators.

The launch of the Gems of India Challenge represents a significant stride towards empowering local storytellers and enhancing the visibility of India's diverse cultures. By providing a platform for digital creators, the initiative not only seeks to promote individual talent but also aims to contribute to the collective narrative of India's rich heritage. As digital storytelling continues to evolve, initiatives like these will be crucial in shaping the future of content creation in the country, fostering a new generation of creators who can share their unique perspectives with the world.
