Maid Sentenced to 18 Months for Abusing 97-Year-Old Employer

The footage from this device revealed days of repeated assaults, prompting the family to report the matter to the police and initiate a legal process against the caregiver.

Indonesian national Siti Nurhayati Marwi Animan admitted to physically abusing the wheelchair-bound man while caring for him. The case, reported by Channel NewsAsia (CNA) on July 10, raised significant concerns about the treatment of the elderly in domestic settings, particularly among those who may not have the ability to communicate their suffering.

A Hidden Camera Captured Repeated Abuse

Court documents detailed the extent of the abuse, revealing that Siti struck the elderly man on his head, face, stomach, arms, and legs on several occasions. The methods of abuse were particularly alarming; she poked his eyes, hit him with a feather duster, pushed him onto a sofa, and even pulled and squeezed his genitals. Such actions not only inflicted physical pain but also emotional harm, as evidenced by the victim's visible distress captured on video.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nicole Teo informed the court that the charges covered only incidents captured on the hidden camera. She emphasized that there could have been more abuse that was never recorded, suggesting a disturbing possibility that the full extent of Siti's actions may never be known. The prosecution also highlighted the emotional trauma inflicted on the elderly victim, with footage showing him clutching his face and grimacing after being struck, which reinforced the severity of the situation.

Siti initially denied the allegations when questioned by the police, which is not uncommon in cases of abuse, where perpetrators often attempt to deflect blame or minimize their actions. However, she ultimately admitted to the offences only after investigators confronted her with the video recordings, indicating a recognition of the irrefutable evidence against her.

The Family Noticed Bruises Before Setting Up Surveillance

Siti had been employed by the family since 2019, during which she was responsible for caring for both the victim and his wife. Following the death of the elderly man’s wife in 2023, Siti continued to care for the elderly man, whose health had been deteriorating significantly. By late 2024, he was wheelchair-bound and living with dementia, conditions that rendered him fully dependent on Siti for daily care and left him vulnerable to exploitation.

The victim’s grandson moved into the home in October 2025 and quickly became aware of fresh bruises appearing on his grandfather’s body almost every day. When questioned about these injuries, Siti reportedly blamed them on falls, accidental bumps, or the elderly man’s own movements. This response raised further suspicions and prompted the grandson to take action.

Unconvinced by Siti’s explanations, the grandson installed a hidden camera beside the television, equipped with a live-streaming function. Between October 30 and November 1, 2025, the camera captured repeated assaults, revealing the true nature of the caregiver's treatment of the elderly man. During this period, the grandson also heard his grandfather shout “cannot beat me” in Teochew several times, a cry for help that went unheard until the family reviewed the recordings. Despite the visible signs of distress, the elderly man insisted nothing had happened when family members checked on him, and Siti reportedly attempted to calm him, indicating a manipulative dynamic at play.

After reviewing the recordings together, the family filed a police report. Siti was arrested the same day, marking a significant turning point in the case and highlighting the importance of vigilance and proactive measures in preventing elder abuse.

The Court Found the Victim’s Vulnerability Made the Offences More Serious

During the court proceedings, District Judge Arvindren R emphasized the victim’s advanced age, dementia, and multiple medical conditions, which made him especially vulnerable to the caregiver’s actions. The judge described the abuse as a sustained pattern of violence against a helpless person, underscoring the moral and legal responsibilities that caregivers hold in such situations. He noted that the charges represented only incidents captured on camera, pointing out that bruises seen weeks earlier had prompted the family to install the surveillance device, indicating a long-standing issue.

Although Siti offered an apology in court and claimed that she wouldn’t repeat her actions, explaining that her behavior stemmed from frustration while managing caregiving duties alongside household chores, the judge found her explanations insufficient to mitigate the severity of her actions. Consequently, she was sentenced to 18 months’ jail, a decision that reflects the judicial system’s stance on the protection of vulnerable individuals.

Under Singapore law, voluntarily causing hurt carries a maximum penalty of three years’ jail, a fine of up to S$5,000, or both. However, when the victim is considered vulnerable, the court can impose up to twice the maximum punishment, highlighting the legal framework designed to safeguard the elderly and other at-risk populations from abuse.
