Following heavy rains, the Assam government has initiated inspections and desiltation works in Guwahati to address waterlogging caused by hill runoff.
Imphal, India Jul 12, 2026 ALN: A day after heavy rain triggered waterlogging across several parts of Guwahati, the Assam government on Sunday launched field inspections of drainage and desiltation works in vulnerable areas.
Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai, who inspected drainage channels from Maligaon Chariali to Jatia and Kahilipara, stated that the drains had largely been cleared before the rain. However, fresh silt deposited by runoff from adjoining hills clogged sections of the drainage network, slowing the discharge of rainwater in some areas.
"Rainwater receded quickly in several locations, but in some localities it took more time. During today's inspection in Maligaon, we found that although drains had been cleaned, silt flowing down from the hills had accumulated in the drainage channels. We have asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to undertake desiltation immediately after every major rainfall event," Rai said.
The minister mentioned that waterlogging was also reported in Jatia and Kahilipara, prompting a joint review by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), and the PWD.
"We are trying to expedite our efforts. Officials have been directed to clean drains up to the final outlet points and ensure that the silt removed from the drains is promptly cleared so that it does not inconvenience the public," he added.
Rai confirmed that inspections and monitoring would continue, with another round of field visits scheduled for Monday to review progress.
In a post on social media earlier, the minister emphasized the government's commitment to building a flood-resilient Guwahati under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
"Our foremost priority is to ensure lasting relief for the people of Guwahati from the menace of artificial urban flooding. Our efforts are focused not only on making Guwahati cleaner and more beautiful, but also on addressing the recurring problem of urban waterlogging," he stated.
Mayor Mrigen Sarania, GMC Commissioner Chinmoy Prakash Phookan, and officials from multiple departments accompanied the minister during the inspection.
