Meghalaya and Assam Implement Safety Measures for Tourists Post-Violence

Gangtok, India Aug 22, 2026 ALN: Shillong: The governments of Meghalaya and Assam have agreed on a series of measures aimed at ensuring the safe movement of tourists and Assam-registered vehicles following a violent incident reported in Shillong on August 19. This decision comes in the wake of a concerning escalation in tensions that have affected public safety and the tourism sector in the region, which is known for its natural beauty and cultural richness.

The joint meeting, held at Koinadhara State Guest House, was led by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and Assam Minister Atul Bora. Senior officials from both states attended the meeting, which lasted more than three hours, reflecting the urgency and seriousness with which both governments are treating the situation. The discussions focused not only on immediate safety measures but also on long-term strategies to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Meghalaya government expressed regret over the August 19 incident, which has raised significant concerns among local communities and the tourism industry. Authorities assured the Assam government that strong legal action would be taken against those involved in the unrest. It was reported that the president, vice-president, and general secretary of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), a prominent student organization in the region, had been arrested under the Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act. This act allows for the maintenance of peace and order, especially in situations where public safety is threatened.

In total, fifteen First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered in connection with the violence, which included targeted attacks on Assam-registered vehicles. The identification of five masked individuals allegedly involved in these attacks marks a significant step towards accountability and justice. Furthermore, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to thoroughly investigate the incidents and prosecute those responsible. This proactive approach aims to reassure the public and restore confidence in the safety of travel within the region.

In the immediate aftermath of the violence, more than 3,770 Assam-registered vehicles have been safely escorted out of Meghalaya into Assam. This operation was crucial in addressing the fears of stranded travelers, as the Assam Control Room received 54 distress calls involving 175 people, including 22 private vehicles and five tourist vehicles. Meanwhile, Meghalaya’s Control Room reported receiving 379 distress calls, highlighting the widespread impact of the unrest on both residents and visitors.

Efforts to facilitate the safe return of travelers have been largely successful, with most stranded individuals and vehicles, including around 400 to 500 vehicles previously held up, having crossed key transit corridors, including the Umiam Lake section. Authorities have assured that any remaining passengers or vehicles seeking to return to Assam will be safely escorted within the next 48 hours, with a dedicated exercise planned to facilitate their movement. This commitment underscores the importance of restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety of all individuals in the region.

In a bid to enhance coordination and communication between the two states, the governments agreed to establish a dedicated coordination mechanism involving the Inspector General (IG) of the Special Branch of Assam and the IG of Law & Order in Meghalaya. This mechanism will play a critical role in managing inter-state relations and ensuring a swift response to any future incidents. Additionally, dedicated helplines and an online support forum will be set up to assist stranded individuals, providing them with timely information and assistance.

Looking ahead, both states have recognized the need for a more structured and collaborative approach to address inter-state border issues. As a longer-term measure, permanent district-level joint committees will be formed, involving officials from Nongpoh and Kamrup Metropolitan districts. This initiative aims to foster dialogue and cooperation between the two states, addressing not only safety concerns but also broader issues related to trade, tourism, and community relations.

Furthermore, a separate joint committee involving transport authorities and tourist vehicle associations will be established to regulate tourist transport and safeguard tourism interests in both states. This committee will focus on creating a safe and welcoming environment for tourists, which is vital for the economies of both Meghalaya and Assam, as tourism is a significant source of revenue and employment in the region.

Both governments have reiterated their commitment to ensuring safe transit for vehicles traveling between Assam and Meghalaya, including those coming from the Barak Valley through Meghalaya. In a statement, the Meghalaya government emphasized its responsibility for the safety and security of tourists and vehicles from Assam and other parts of the country while they are traveling and staying in the state. This assurance is crucial in rebuilding trust among potential visitors who may have been deterred by the recent violence.

The measures taken by the governments of Meghalaya and Assam reflect a broader recognition of the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
