The Special Investigation Team has concluded its extensive probe into the Dharmasthala mass burial case, submitting a detailed 7,005-page report to the court.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) on Wednesday submitted its final report before a court in Belthangady in connection with the alleged Dharmasthala mass burial case, bringing to a close an extensive probe that has attracted significant public attention in Karnataka.

The final report, comprising 7,005 pages compiled into 12 volumes, was submitted before Additional Civil Judge Shashank Nagendra Bhat at around 3 pm. It includes statements from 255 witnesses, forensic science laboratory (FSL) reports, and other supporting documents gathered during the investigation. The SIT also submitted a 4TB hard disk containing video-recorded statements of witnesses, which is a critical component in ensuring the integrity and reliability of the testimonies provided.

Materials seized during the investigation, including skeletal remains, bones, mobile phones, and other items sent for forensic examination, were produced before the court after completion of testing. This aspect of the investigation has been particularly crucial, as the physical evidence collected plays a significant role in corroborating witness testimonies and establishing a factual basis for the allegations made. SIT Superintendent of Police C.A. Simon, Inspector Kusumadhara, Inspector Manjunath, and other members of the investigating team were present during the submission of the report, underscoring the importance of the case to law enforcement agencies in the region.

C.N. Chinnayya, considered a key figure and popularly referred to as the "mask man" in the case and one of the accused named in the proceedings, also appeared before the court along with his wife. Chinnayya's involvement in the case has been pivotal, as his claims of being coerced into participating in the disposal of bodies have sparked significant public discourse and raised questions about the ethical and legal ramifications of such actions.

Earlier, on November 20, 2025, the SIT had filed a 3,923-page perjury report under Section 215 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against C.N. Chinnayya, Mahesh Shetty Timarodi, Girish Mattannavar, Jayanth T., Vittal Gowda, and Sujatha Bhat. However, the Belthangady court declined to accept the perjury report and directed the SIT to submit a comprehensive final report instead. This decision highlights the judicial system's emphasis on thoroughness and the need for a complete picture before proceeding with any legal action against the accused parties.

The report submitted on Wednesday includes the earlier 3,923-page perjury report along with an additional 3,082 pages, taking the total volume of the investigation records to 7,005 pages. The sheer volume of documentation reflects the complexity and gravity of the case, as well as the extensive efforts made by the SIT to compile a comprehensive account of the events and circumstances surrounding the alleged mass burials.

The Dharmasthala case pertains to allegations of mass burials in Dharmasthala village in Mangaluru district. The Dharmasthala mass burial case refers to allegations that several unidentified bodies were secretly buried in and around Dharmasthala, a prominent temple town in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district, over a period of years. This situation has raised numerous ethical, legal, and social concerns, particularly regarding the treatment of unidentified bodies and the implications for public health and safety.

The controversy surfaced after an individual, identified as C.N. Chinnayya, claimed that he had been forced to participate in the disposal and burial of bodies at various locations in Dharmasthala. His allegations triggered widespread public debate and led the Karnataka government to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter. The formation of the SIT indicates the seriousness with which the government is treating the allegations, as well as a commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in the investigation process.

The implications of the findings from the SIT's investigation could be far-reaching. If substantiated, the allegations could lead to significant legal consequences for those involved, including potential criminal charges for improper disposal of bodies, which raises questions about the ethical treatment of the deceased. Additionally, the case has broader societal implications, as it touches on issues of human rights, dignity in death, and the responsibilities of local authorities in managing public health and safety.

Furthermore, the case has also ignited discussions about the cultural and religious dimensions of death and burial practices in India, particularly in a region like Karnataka, where traditional customs often dictate the treatment of the deceased. The handling of unidentified bodies and the processes surrounding their burial are sensitive topics that intersect with legal, ethical, and cultural considerations, making the outcome of this investigation particularly significant.

The public's reaction to the case has been mixed, reflecting the complexity of the issues at hand. Many community members have expressed outrage at the allegations, calling for justice and accountability, while others have raised concerns about the potential for sensationalism and the impact of the case on the local community's reputation. The media coverage surrounding the case has further amplified these sentiments, contributing to a charged atmosphere in which public opinion could influence the proceedings.

As the legal process unfolds, the SIT's findings and the court's subsequent actions will likely be closely monitored by both the public and legal experts. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough investigations in addressing serious allegations and ensuring that justice is served, while also highlighting the delicate balance between public interest and individual rights in legal matters.

In addition to the immediate legal ramifications, the case raises broader questions about the systems in place for handling unidentified bodies in India. The management of such cases often falls under the purview of local authorities, who may lack the resources or protocols necessary to address these situations effectively. This can lead to a lack of transparency and accountability, as seen in the Dharmasthala case.

Moreover, the implications of the case extend beyond legal accountability. They also touch upon the moral and ethical responsibilities of society in dealing with the dead. The treatment of unidentified bodies is not only a legal issue but also a reflection of societal values and the respect afforded to individuals, even in death. The manner in which communities respond to such allegations can either reinforce or challenge existing norms regarding dignity and respect for the deceased.

As the investigation continues, it is crucial for all stakeholders, including law enforcement, legal experts, and community leaders, to engage in open dialogues about the ethical considerations surrounding death and burial practices. This case serves as an opportunity for reflection on how society values human life and dignity, even after death, and what measures can be taken to ensure that such tragic situations are handled with the utmost care and respect.

In conclusion, the Dharmasthala mass burial case is not merely a legal matter; it is a profound societal issue that calls for introspection and action. The findings of the SIT and the subsequent court rulings will likely set important precedents for how similar cases are handled in the future, potentially influencing policies related to public health, ethics, and the treatment of the deceased in India. As the community watches closely, the hope remains that the pursuit of justice will lead to meaningful changes that honor the dignity of all individuals, regardless of their circumstances.
