Restoration teams work to clear flood-hit NH-27 at Jorabat as heavy rains continue to affect Guwahati, prompting traffic diversions and alerts.

 Water drainage and mud clearance operations are underway at Jorabat along National Highway-27 on Monday after flash floods triggered by incessant rainfall brought traffic to a near standstill at one of Guwahati's busiest entry points a day earlier.

The restoration work continued even as fresh spells of heavy rain led to waterlogging across several parts of the city, prompting weather warnings and fresh advisories from authorities. The situation in Jorabat is a stark reminder of the challenges that urban centers in Assam face during the monsoon season, which typically lasts from June to September. This period is characterized by heavy rainfall that can lead to severe flooding, particularly in low-lying areas.

According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), continuous rainfall since Sunday afternoon triggered flash flooding at Jorabat, severely disrupting vehicular movement along the highway. The Jorabat area serves as a critical junction for traffic entering and leaving Guwahati, the largest city in Assam and a significant commercial hub in Northeast India. The heavy rains resulted in waterlogging that made it impossible for vehicles to pass, leading to a backlog of traffic that extended for several kilometers.

The authority said restoration work was launched immediately after the flooding. Crews have been deployed to clear mud and debris, and to establish proper drainage systems to facilitate the swift removal of water. "Restoration efforts were initiated immediately, and teams are on site carrying out water drainage and mud clearance operations on priority to restore normal traffic conditions at the earliest," NHAI said in a post on social media. This proactive approach is crucial in minimizing disruptions and ensuring that the flow of traffic is restored as quickly as possible.

To reduce congestion, the authority issued a traffic advisory for commuters using the Jorabat corridor. This kind of advisory is common during emergencies, as it helps to guide motorists toward alternate routes, thereby alleviating some of the pressure on the affected areas. Incoming light motor vehicles (LMVs) heading towards Guwahati have been diverted via Digaru, while outgoing LMVs from the city are being diverted from Koinadhara Point. These detours are expected to reduce the volume of traffic on NH-27, allowing for more efficient clearance and restoration efforts.

Motorists travelling out of Guwahati have also been advised to use the Narengi route until normal traffic movement is restored. Such measures are critical in urban planning and disaster management, as they help to maintain some level of mobility even during adverse weather conditions. However, it also places additional pressure on alternate routes, which may not be designed to handle the sudden influx of traffic.

On Sunday, hours of relentless rainfall submerged stretches of NH-27 at Jorabat, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded and causing massive traffic snarls at one of the principal gateways to Guwahati. The implications of such flooding are far-reaching, affecting not just commuters but also local businesses, emergency services, and the overall economy of the region. The inability to move goods and services can lead to significant losses, particularly in a city that relies heavily on road transport for trade.

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall continued to affect several parts of Guwahati on Monday. Areas including Sijubari, Ambari, Chandmari Colony and adjoining localities witnessed waterlogging within minutes of intense showers, disrupting traffic and inconveniencing commuters. Urban infrastructure in these areas is often ill-equipped to handle sudden surges in rainfall, leading to a cycle of flooding that exacerbates the situation with each downpour.

With more rain forecast over the coming days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Kamrup and Morigaon districts under an Orange Alert on Monday, warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning at isolated places over the next two to three days. An Orange Alert indicates that conditions are favorable for severe weather, and residents are advised to stay informed and take precautions. The IMD's forecasting plays a crucial role in disaster preparedness, allowing authorities and residents to brace for potential impacts.

The IMD has forecast 6 cm to 12 cm of rainfall at isolated locations in and around Guwahati over a 24-hour period, cautioning that continued precipitation could worsen urban flooding, waterlogging, flash floods, traffic congestion, and trigger landslides in vulnerable areas. Such predictions underscore the necessity for robust urban planning and drainage systems, as well as the importance of community awareness regarding flood risks.

In a separate forecast, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati, predicted 2 cm to 6 cm of rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning during the next 24 hours. This added layer of risk highlights the unpredictability of weather patterns during the monsoon season, which can lead to sudden and severe weather events. It also emphasizes the need for ongoing monitoring and timely updates from meteorological agencies.

It warned that low-lying areas, underpasses, and major roads could witness further inundation and traffic disruptions while visibility may be reduced during intense spells of rain. Such conditions can pose significant dangers to drivers, leading to accidents and further complicating rescue and recovery efforts.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said emergency response systems had been kept on alert and urged residents, particularly those living in low-lying and hillside areas, to remain vigilant.
