Joins Nationwide Campaign for a Drug-Free India

Shillong, India Aug 3, 2026 ALN: On Sunday, joined the nationwide ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat– Sankalp Abhiyan’, with Governor CH Vijayashankar and various state educational institutions participating in the virtual launch led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This initiative is part of a broader national effort aimed at combating substance abuse among the youth of India, a demographic that is increasingly vulnerable to drug addiction and its associated societal problems.

The campaign was launched simultaneously at around 28,000 locations across the country, with more than one crore youths participating virtually. This staggering involvement underscores the critical engagement of the youth in addressing the pressing issue of substance abuse, which has become a significant concern in various regions of India. The nationwide event also saw the involvement of governors, chief ministers, union ministers, educational institutions, youth organisations, spiritual groups, and other stakeholders committed to the goal of a drug-free India.

The programme at Lok Bhavan in Shillong began with a welcome by MY Bharat volunteers, followed by opening remarks from Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya. He highlighted the objectives of the campaign and stressed the importance of youth participation in combating substance abuse. Mandaviya's remarks reflect a growing recognition among policymakers of the need to empower young people as proactive agents of change in their communities.

A short film on the initiative was screened before the Prime Minister addressed participants virtually. The film served as a powerful visual tool to convey the campaign's message and to illustrate the dangers of drug abuse, reinforcing the urgency of the initiative. The event witnessed the participation of students and faculty members from several educational institutions across the state, including North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong, and Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), alongside representatives from other universities and colleges in the state.

Others who attended the programme included members of various religious and spiritual organisations, and Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor HC Chaudhary. The diverse attendance reflects the widespread concern about drug abuse and the collective responsibility that various sectors of society bear in addressing this issue. Following the Prime Minister’s address, participants at Lok Bhavan took the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to preventing substance abuse and promoting healthy and responsible lifestyles.

The programme concluded with a street play presented by the state-level winners of a Nasha Mukti competition, highlighting the harmful effects of drug abuse and underscoring the need for collective efforts by families, educational institutions, communities, and government agencies to raise awareness and curb substance abuse. The use of creative expressions, such as street plays, serves as an effective medium to engage the youth and convey important messages in a relatable manner.

This campaign forms part of the Centre’s broader effort to mobilise young people across the country in the fight against drug addiction and to promote a healthier and more productive society. Substance abuse has been linked to various social issues, including crime, mental health disorders, and family disintegration, making the need for preventative measures all the more critical.

Meanwhile, the University of Science and Technology (USTM) also joined the nationwide programme by organising a virtual viewing of the launch at its central auditorium. The programme at USTM was attended by Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque, Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) GD Sharma, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi Nipon Hajong, District Informatics Officer, NIC, Ri-Bhoi, Jonathan Marbaniang, Network Engineer, NIC, Ri-Bhoi, Wanrapbok Kharshandi, and Director of Medical Administration, USTM, Prof. (Dr.) AC Kataki. The involvement of educational institutions in this initiative is crucial as they play a significant role in shaping the attitudes and behaviours of young people.

Speaking on the occasion, the Vice Chancellor reiterated USTM’s dedication to nurturing socially responsible citizens through quality education. Hoque thanked the central and state governments for enabling the university to join the initiative, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and government bodies in addressing societal challenges. Hajong lauded the Centre’s commitment to combating substance abuse and encouraged students to become ambassadors of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan by spreading awareness within their communities.

On the occasion, a solemn Nasha Mukt Bharat Pledge was administered, with students, faculty members, NSS volunteers, and officials pledging to remain free from substance abuse and contribute towards building a healthier society. This pledge not only reinforces individual commitment but also fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility among participants.

The participants then joined the Prime Minister’s live address, which reinforced the vital role of India’s youth in realising the vision of Viksit Bharat. The programme witnessed the participation of nearly 10,000 students, faculty members, NSS volunteers, and staff, showcasing the significant mobilization of the educational sector in support of this campaign. The Prime Minister's address likely served to inspire and motivate young people to take action against substance abuse and to envision a future where India is free from the scourge of drugs.

The event concluded with a collective resolve to carry forward the Prime Minister’s message and strengthen the nationwide movement for a Nasha Mukt Bharat, paving the way for a healthier, stronger, and Viksit Bharat.
