Researchers at the University of Arizona have discovered cannabis-derived terpenes that significantly reduce chronic pain without psychoactive effects, offering new hope for treatment.
New Delhi, India Jun 20, 2026 ALN: Researchers at the University of Arizona Sciences have made significant strides in the field of pain management by identifying compounds from the Cannabis sativa plant that may provide a new avenue for treating conditions such as fibromyalgia and post-surgical pain. The findings, published in the peer-reviewed journal Pharmacological Reports, contribute to a growing body of evidence suggesting that specific cannabis-derived molecules could effectively alleviate chronic pain without the psychoactive effects commonly associated with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
This study builds upon earlier research conducted by the lab of John Streicher, PhD, a prominent figure in the Comprehensive Center for Pain & Addiction at the University of Arizona. Previous investigations had revealed that terpenes, which are aromatic compounds found in many plants, could reduce pain in various models of inflammation and nerve damage related to chemotherapy. This earlier work laid the groundwork for exploring the potential of terpenes in treating chronic pain conditions.
"Our research is showing that terpenes are not a good option for reducing acute pain resulting from an injury, such as stubbing your toe or touching a hot stove; however, we are seeing significant reductions in pain when terpenes are used for chronic or pathological pain," said Streicher, who serves as a professor in the U of A College of Medicine -- Tucson's Department of Pharmacology. "This study was the first to investigate the impact of terpenes in preclinical models of fibromyalgia and post-operative pain and expand the scope of potential pain-relieving treatments using terpenes."
Terpenes are natural compounds responsible for the scent and flavor profile of many plants, including cannabis. In addition to contributing to the plant's distinctive aroma, terpenes may possess medicinal properties that are of interest to researchers. For this study, researchers examined four terpenes commonly found in Cannabis sativa: geraniol, linalool, beta-caryophyllene, and alpha-humulene. In mouse models of fibromyalgia and post-operative pain, all four terpenes demonstrated substantial pain-relieving effects. Among them, geraniol delivered the strongest results, followed by linalool, beta-caryophyllene, and alpha-humulene. "With fibromyalgia, there isn't much understanding of what the pain state is, and there are not a lot of great options for treating it," Streicher noted. "Our findings show that terpenes may be a viable treatment option for fibromyalgia pain, which could potentially have a large impact and make a difference for an under-treated population." The implications of this research could be transformative for individuals suffering from fibromyalgia, providing a new pathway for pain management that is both effective and devoid of the psychoactive effects associated with cannabis use.
In addition to exploring the effects of terpenes on fibromyalgia, the researchers also investigated their potential role in managing post-surgical pain. Current pain management strategies often rely on opioids, which are effective in controlling post-surgical pain but come with significant risks, including constipation and the potential for addiction. Streicher emphasized the need for alternative options, stating, "Opioids do a good job controlling post-surgical pain, but they can cause constipation that can increase the chances of post-surgical complications such as adhesions. We are always looking for better options, and this study suggests that terpenes could be a novel therapeutic for post-operative pain." The global landscape of surgical procedures underscores the urgency for safer and more effective pain management solutions; approximately 310 million major surgical procedures are performed worldwide each year, as reported in the International Journal of Surgery.
The findings of this research highlight the importance of exploring naturally occurring compounds for their potential therapeutic applications. Todd Vanderah, PhD, director of the Comprehensive Center for Pain & Addiction at U of A Sciences and professor and head of the Department of Pharmacology at the U of A College of Medicine -- Tucson, remarked on the significance of this work. "The research that is being done by Dr. Streicher's lab on terpenes and their potential to help those who suffer from chronic pain demonstrates the importance of basic research. There are hundreds of unique chemicals that plants make, including the Cannabis plant, that are undiscovered," Vanderah stated. This sentiment echoes a broader trend in the scientific community, where natural products continue to yield valuable insights into potential treatments for various diseases and disorders.
Vanderah also pointed to the example of semaglutide, a medication that has gained attention for its use in managing diabetes and obesity. The research team further investigated the mechanisms through which the terpenes exert their pain-relieving effects. They found that these compounds appeared to act through the adenosine A2a receptor, a target that is also influenced by caffeine.
