In a major leap forward for traditional healthcare and conservation, a survey has documented the rich medicinal potential of mangroves along North Goa and Maharashtra’s Konkan coast. Mangroves, often referred to as the ‘coastal guardians,’ play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. The research was conducted between September 2024 and January 2025 across various coastal villages, including Neura, Siridao, Pernem, Dabhil Ambere, and Padel. During this period, the survey documented 16 mangrove species across eight botanical families, comprising 13 trees, two shrubs, and one fern. This comprehensive approach not only catalogues the species but also underscores the importance of each in traditional medicine practices.
One of the standout species identified in the survey is Acanthus ilicifolius, which has emerged as a versatile remedy with a wide range of applications. Traditionally, its roots are utilized to treat ailments such as cough, asthma, leucorrhoea, and general weakness. The leaves, when prepared as decoctions, are known to alleviate rheumatism, while the fruits are recognized for their blood-purifying properties. Additionally, various parts of the plant are applied in managing diabetes, hepatitis, skin diseases, snakebites, and kidney stones. Other vital species include Bruguiera gymnorhiza, which has been reported to treat diarrhoea, diabetes, conjunctivitis, and intestinal worms, showcasing its importance in local healthcare. Xylocarpus granatum is another significant species whose bark is traditionally used to combat cholera, dysentery, and malaria. Its seeds are also noted for addressing digestive ailments and breast tumours, indicating the plant's multifaceted medicinal properties. Furthermore, Rhizophora apiculata and Rhizophora mucronata are relied upon for treating inflammatory bowel conditions, hepatitis, and bleeding disorders. Other species such as Avicennia officinalis and Aegiceras corniculatum are commonly used for treating wounds, asthma, and rheumatism, further highlighting the diverse therapeutic potential of mangrove species.
The research team, led by PhD scholar Jitendra Jayant Tapaswi, alongside esteemed colleagues including Prof Meena S Deogade, Dr Shivani Ghildiyal, and Dr Bidhan Mahajon from the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in New Delhi, and Dr Tanuja Manoj Nesari, Director of the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda in Jamnagar, has made significant strides in bridging the gap between traditional knowledge and scientific validation. Their work not only documents the medicinal properties of these plants but also sheds light on unique biological adaptations that enable them to thrive in challenging intertidal zones. Six members of the Rhizophoraceae family, for example, exhibit specialized root structures that allow them to cope with saline conditions and fluctuating tides, showcasing the remarkable resilience of these plants.
Despite the encouraging findings of the survey, the authors issued a stark warning regarding the future of these mangrove species. Although all 16 recorded species are currently classified as “Least Concern” on the IUCN Red List, most are facing declining population trends. This decline is driven by a myriad of factors, including coastal development, aquaculture expansion, pollution, deforestation, climate change, and the erosion of traditional knowledge.
