Urges integration of ecosystems, modern tech to combat rising disasters

Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday called for an urgent need to integrate nature-based solutions into climate resilience strategies during a conference at the Islamic University of Science & Technology (IUST). The event focused on strengthening climate resilience and livelihoods in the Himalayan region amid escalating environmental challenges. This call to action comes at a crucial time, as the Himalayas face increasing threats from climate change, which has significant implications for both the local population and the broader ecological balance.

The Lieutenant Governor inaugurated new facilities—including the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Block at IUST’s main campus, Larmoo Campus, and the Law School—and praised the university for its initiatives, notably its policy brief on the Drug-Free Jammu Kashmir campaign. These facilities are part of a broader effort to enhance educational infrastructure in the region, which is essential for fostering research and innovation in fields critical to addressing environmental and social challenges.

Highlighting the alarming pace of climate change in the Himalayas, Sinha revealed that between January and August last year, the region experienced nearly daily natural disasters. Jammu and Kashmir alone suffered extensive damage from flash floods and cloudbursts, which have disrupted infrastructure such as roads, water supply schemes, and power systems. This pattern of increasing natural disasters underscores the urgent need for effective climate adaptation strategies, particularly in a region that is home to diverse ecosystems and a rich cultural heritage.

Addressing the intersection of development and conservation, Sinha underscored that natural systems are fundamental infrastructure. “Constructing watersheds, wetlands, and forested slopes are not just environmental efforts—they are vital flood control, water purification, and protective measures,” he said. He warned that destroying these ecosystems risks jeopardizing the future, whereas conserving them offers long-term benefits. He referenced the Green Jammu Kashmir Drive launched in 2020, which increased forest cover to nearly 55 percent, and reiterated the importance of sustainable living to preserve biodiversity and cultural heritage. Initiatives like this are vital not only for enhancing carbon sequestration but also for maintaining the ecological balance that supports diverse flora and fauna in the region. The preservation of biodiversity is crucial, as it contributes to ecosystem resilience, ensuring that natural systems can withstand and adapt to changing climatic conditions.

“Involving communities, leveraging modern technologies, and placing nature at the core of development can build resilience in the Himalayas against climate change,” the Lieutenant Governor stated. “Himalayas are not merely a geographical entity but a living heritage that demands foresight and responsibility.” This statement encapsulates the multifaceted approach needed to address the climate crisis, emphasizing the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic factors.

During the event, Sinha released a special edition of IUST’s monthly magazine ‘Times Echo,’ featuring the 100-Day Anti-Drug campaign and the Policy Brief on Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan. These initiatives reflect a broader commitment to addressing social issues that intersect with environmental challenges, recognizing that community health and well-being are integral to sustainable development. Certificates were also awarded to trainees of the PMKVY program, highlighting the importance of skill development in fostering economic resilience.

The conference was attended by Justice Sanjeev Kumar, Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh; IUST Vice Chancellor Prof Shakil A. Romshoo; Registrar Prof Shamim Ahmad Shah; conference convener Prof Javed Hussain Mir; alongside eminent scientists, officials, faculty, and students. The diverse attendance underscores the collaborative effort required to address the urgent challenges posed by climate change in the Himalayas. As stakeholders from various sectors come together, there is potential for innovative solutions that can enhance both environmental and socio-economic resilience in the region.
