The board noted, "The interruption creates unexpected financial pressure and will impact our ability to pay members at least in the near-term." Reports indicate that the National Energy System Operator (Neso) instructed the National Grid to shut down a crucial "super grid transformer" to prevent the local transmission network from exceeding safety voltage limits due to the influx of solar power. Managing the surge in solar energy generation is particularly challenging during the summer months, when extended sunny days lead to excess energy production. While specialized equipment can mitigate potential voltage issues, necessary upgrades for the area surrounding the Derril Water solar park have not yet been implemented, highlighting the lag in infrastructure development in response to the rapid growth of renewable energy sources.

The board of the cooperative believes that the challenges facing the North Devon network have been known since 2023, with new equipment scheduled for installation by the end of 2025. However, these upgrades have been delayed and are now expected to be completed in September, raising concerns about the planning and responsiveness of energy infrastructure to the demands of a transitioning energy landscape.

Unfortunately, the project does not anticipate receiving any compensation or insurance to cover the lost revenue from the solar park, which was initially funded through £20 million raised from cooperative members and a £22 million long-term bank loan. Members had originally joined the scheme through Ripple Energy, which provided households with the opportunity to invest in what was touted as Britain’s first "shared" solar park. However, Ripple Energy faced significant challenges, including construction delays and rising costs that culminated in the company's bankruptcy in early 2025, prior to the park's operational launch.

Despite these setbacks, the solar park finally began generating electricity in September last year under the management of its volunteer board, just months after Ripple was rescued from administration by the energy provider 1st Energy. This transition marked a hopeful turn for the project, yet the current shutdown raises questions about the long-term viability of such initiatives in the face of regulatory and infrastructural hurdles.

Despite the frustration expressed by some members regarding the shutdown, the majority seem to understand that the issues are not attributable to the solar park or its management. A spokesperson for the National Grid confirmed that generation had been curtailed in the local area to maintain system security following Neso's directive to turn off the super-grid transformer. They added that efforts are underway to find solutions to these temporary constraints, indicating an acknowledgment of the need for improved coordination between renewable energy generation and grid management.

Neso has declined to comment on the situation, leaving many stakeholders in the dark about the rationale behind the decision and the expected timeline for resolution.
