An elephant that terrorized villages in Andhra Pradesh for three years following a tragic accident has been captured and sent for rehabilitation.
Amaravati, India Jul 17, 2026 ALN: Palamaner: An elephant that has been on a rampage for the last three years after losing all members of its herd in a highway accident was finally captured in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. This elephant had been attacking villages, raiding crops, and terrorizing residents in the Palamaner forest division. The situation surrounding this elephant highlights the complex relationship between wildlife and human populations, especially in regions where urban development encroaches upon natural habitats.
The pachyderm, which had developed aggressive behavior, was sent to an elephant camp for veterinary and behavioral assessments. Officials reported that the animal would chase people, particularly those on two-wheelers, leading to a growing concern for public safety. The aggressive behavior exhibited by the elephant can be attributed to a combination of stress from its traumatic experience and the loss of its herd, which is critical for the social structure and emotional well-being of elephants.
Forest department officials indicated that the elephant was “grieving,” which contributed to its unpredictable and dangerous behavior. Elephants are known to experience a wide range of emotions, including grief, and this incident underscores the importance of understanding animal behavior in wildlife management. The sub-adult tusker was originally part of a herd of four, including two sub-adult males, one female, and a calf. Tragically, on the night of June 14, 2023, a speeding truck collided with the herd while they were crossing the Bengaluru-Chennai National Highway (NH-4) near Palamaner, resulting in the deaths of three elephants. This lone elephant escaped without injuries, but the psychological impact of the incident has been profound.
“This elephant lost its herd and became a grieving, solitary animal. Since the tragedy, it has frequently returned to the area where the accident occurred, crossing the NH-4 at unpredictable times. It became a threat not only to people on the highway but also to itself, as the possibility of another accident was high,” stated R Yashoda Bai, conservator of forests for the Anantapur Circle. The behavior of the elephant serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by wildlife when their natural habitats overlap with human infrastructure, creating a precarious situation for both animals and people.
Yashoda Bai further noted, “It was not eating properly, chewing up garbage and trash, and its health was deteriorating. Villagers were also complaining about it. It had to be rescued.” The forest department had been monitoring the elephant’s movements and activities closely, spending considerable resources over the last three years to ensure the safety of both the animal and the local community. This monitoring included tracking the elephant’s movements and assessing its health, which became increasingly concerning as it resorted to scavenging for food.
Several people had narrow escapes after coming into close contact with the elephant. One notable incident occurred when the elephant fell on S Sukumar, a section officer in the Palamaner Forest Division. Sukumar recalled, “I thought I was going to die. Imagine an elephant falling on you.” This incident happened on September 13, 2025, when the elephant aggressively pursued vehicles and people on NH-4. Sukumar and a forest department tracker, B Hari, were attempting to drive the elephant away when it unexpectedly charged at them. The dangers associated with wildlife encounters, particularly with large animals like elephants, pose significant risks to human safety, emphasizing the need for effective wildlife management strategies.
During the chase, the elephant slipped and fell on Sukumar. After a few minutes, the confused elephant regained its footing and ran away, while Sukumar was seriously injured and required hospitalization. Remarkably, Sukumar participated in the operation to capture the elephant months later. His experience highlights the personal risks faced by forest officials and the dedication they have to ensuring the safety of both wildlife and human communities.
The capture operation was high-tech, utilizing drones and thermal sensor cameras to monitor the elephant continuously, confirm its identity, study its behavior, map its movement patterns, and identify suitable capture sites. It took months of planning and monitoring to ensure the elephant could be captured safely, according to G Subburaj, the district forest officer for Chittoor. The use of technology in wildlife management reflects a growing trend in conservation efforts, where data-driven approaches are increasingly employed to ensure effective outcomes.
“This young elephant would have been happy and safe with its herd. Instead, it was lonely and disoriented with frequent mood swings,” Subburaj remarked. The psychological and emotional states of elephants are critical for their well-being, and the loss of social bonds can lead to erratic behavior, which can become dangerous in human-dominated landscapes.
Although the elephant displayed aggression towards humans, it fled when approached by forest guards or trackers on “kumki” elephants—trained captive elephants used to capture or rescue wild elephants. “We realized that it ran away because these kumki elephants were older and bigger. When we used young elephants of the same age as this elephant, it approached and tried to be friendly. It appeared that the young kumki elephants were trying to console him. This helped a lot in planning and managing the operation to capture it,” Yashoda Bai explained. This strategy of using young kumki elephants demonstrates an innovative approach to wildlife capture, emphasizing empathy and understanding of animal behavior.
After a thorough examination of the field situation, permission was granted by the principal chief conservator of forests (wildlife) and the chief wildlife warden to capture the elephant under the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The forest department then formed an advisory committee, field capture team, veterinary teams, tracking teams, logistics teams, and communication teams. This collaborative effort highlights the importance of inter-departmental coordination in wildlife management, ensuring that all aspects of the operation are covered effectively.
Continuous monitoring of the elephant was conducted using drones and thermal sensor cameras to confirm its identity, study its behavior, map its movement patterns, and identify suitable capture sites. Risk assessments were carried out to identify safe darting locations, emergency evacuation routes, and transportation logistics. Coordination meetings were held with various departments, including police, revenue, health, animal husbandry, and fire services, to ensure seamless support during the operation. This comprehensive planning process reflects the complexities involved in wildlife capture and the need for a multi-faceted approach to ensure both safety and success.
Ultimately, five trained kumki elephants from the Musalimadugu Elephant Camp were deployed for the operation. The elephant was finally captured near Palamaner, close to the location where it lost its herd. The entire operation cost nearly Rs 5 lakh, illustrating the significant financial resources that are often required for wildlife management efforts.
The captured elephant was transported to Musalimadugu Elephant Camp, where it will remain under veterinary observation and undergo a behavioral assessment. The state’s deputy chief minister and minister for forests and environment, K Pawan Kalyan, praised the operation and commended the forest department for effectively balancing public safety with wildlife conservation.
