GSU Stands with Sonam Wangchuk, Urges Educational Reforms in

Shillong, India Jul 24, 2026 ALN: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Eastern Zone, Williamnagar, on Friday, organized a peaceful Students’ Gathering at the parking lot in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in East Garo Hills to express solidarity with renowned education reformer Sonam Wangchuk and the students’ movement in New Delhi. This gathering is part of a broader wave of activism that seeks to address systemic issues within the education sector, not only in but across various regions of India.

Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer and education reformer, has gained national recognition for his innovative approaches to education and sustainable development, particularly in the Ladakh region. The Union also expressed concern over the effectiveness of the existing teacher training programs, observing that many such programs have not translated into meaningful improvements in classroom teaching. Sangma was also submitted on the occasion, through the East Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, urging the Government to undertake comprehensive reforms in the education sector. The memorandum outlined specific demands that reflect the urgent need for systemic change. It called for improvement of school infrastructure, strengthening of road connectivity, recruitment of adequate teachers, decentralization of educational opportunities to all districts, reformation of teacher training programs, minimizing non-teaching assignments for teachers, strengthening digital education, establishing district-level competitive examination coaching centers, and introducing meaningful career guidance and skill development programs.

The call for infrastructure improvement is particularly significant, as many schools in rural areas operate in dilapidated buildings, lacking essential facilities such as clean drinking water, sanitation, and basic learning materials.
