Science League 2026 Concludes with Top Innovators Recognized in Itanagar

The inaugural Science League 2026 in Itanagar showcased innovative projects by young scientists, with awards presented to top participants in various categories.

The first edition of the Science League (ASL) 2026 concluded on Friday, with the Government of (GoAP) announcing that the event will now be a part of the annual calendar of the Youth Affairs Department (YAD). This marks a significant step towards promoting scientific innovation and STEM education among the youth, themed "STEM for Viksit and Atmanirbhar Bharat." This theme resonates with the national agenda of fostering a self-reliant India, particularly through advancements in science and technology.

The event was organized by the YAD in collaboration with the State Council for Science and Technology at the Science Centre in IG Park, bringing together some of the state’s brightest young innovators. The participants presented projects that addressed real-world challenges through science and technology, showcasing the potential of youth to contribute meaningfully to contemporary issues.

Participants showcased innovations across a wide range of themes, including emerging technology, water conservation and management, green energy, sustainable agriculture, health and hygiene, waste management, and other contemporary STEM disciplines. These themes are particularly relevant given the pressing environmental challenges and socio-economic issues faced by communities in and beyond.

Officials stated that the inclusion of the ASL in the YAD’s annual calendar reflects the GoAP’s long-term commitment to fostering a scientific temperament, innovation, and research among students and young entrepreneurs. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance educational outcomes and equip the youth with the skills necessary for the 21st century, which is increasingly dominated by technology and innovation.

The ASL received over 40 entries from across the state, with the junior category alone attracting more than 30 submissions. The organizers noted that the quality of projects was so impressive that the jury found it challenging to shortlist winners. In recognition of the exceptional standard of entries, the YAD increased the prize money in the junior category from the originally announced ₹70,000 to ₹90,000. Such measures not only incentivize participation but also validate the hard work and creativity of young innovators.

The projects were evaluated by an eminent panel, which included Assam Pollution Control Board Chairman Dr. Arup Misra as the chief guest, Noida’s National Innovation Foundation Scientist ‘E’ Dr. Nitin Maurya, and Guwahati Biotech Park’s Dr. Bula Chaudhuri. The diverse backgrounds and expertise of the jury members ensured a comprehensive evaluation process, highlighting the importance of mentorship and guidance from established professionals in the field.

Kolkata’s Birla Industrial and Technological Museum technical officer Tarun Das conducted an interactive fun science show featuring live scientific demonstrations and a bubble show that drew enthusiastic participation from students, adding a new attraction to the event. Such interactive experiences are crucial in sparking interest in science among young minds, making learning both fun and engaging.

The Science Centre also organized complimentary planetarium shows for more than 350 students, offering them an immersive introduction to astronomy and space science. This initiative aligns with the goal of broadening students' horizons and inspiring them to explore various fields of science, encouraging curiosity and inquiry.

In the senior category, Mitto Mossang of Rajiv Gandhi University won first prize for a project on emerging technology. Tabuk Taggu and Paul secured second prize for their work on water conservation and management, while Niktar Tare, Vijay Taniu, and Toko Tem finished third for developing a hybrid multi-layered TEG system. These projects not only demonstrate the ingenuity of the participants but also address significant challenges that the state and the country face, particularly in sustainable development.

In the junior category, Bengia Ama of Don Bosco College claimed the top prize for a hands-free cooking device. Yompin Kena of Scholars Institute secured second place for Kombo AI, while Swati Upadhyay and Aditya Mishra of NERIST finished third for their project Gesture to Voice. The variety of projects reflects the diverse interests and capabilities of young students, showcasing their potential to innovate in various sectors.

Among special recognitions, Rei Lemo of NIOS received the People’s Choice Award, carrying a cash prize of ₹10,000 for securing the highest number of public votes for an emerging technology project. Bolam Loham was presented the Special Jury Award and ₹10,000 for developing an innovative Exoskeleton project, which the jury described as having significant future potential. Such recognitions not only encourage individual participants but also promote a culture of innovation within educational institutions.

Despite persistent rain throughout the day, students from different parts of the state participated enthusiastically, demonstrating resilience and creativity. The YAD lauded all participants, mentors, educational institutions, judges, volunteers, and visitors for their contributions to the event's success. The ability of students to overcome challenges is indicative of their determination and passion for science, which is essential for future innovations.

The ASL is envisioned to become the state’s premier platform for nurturing scientific talent, encouraging innovation, and inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs.
