Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) are expected to contribute significantly to India's economy through the FCNR initiative, potentially bringing in $70-80 billion.
New Delhi, India Jul 17, 2026 ALN: Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) have the potential to bring USD 70-80 billion in foreign currency inflows into India through the ongoing FCNR initiative, under which banks are offering higher interest rates for a limited period, a Singapore-based chartered accountant said on Friday.
The estimate was also discussed during a global webinar organised by the Singapore Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in association with the ICAI's International Affairs Committee and its 25 overseas chapters on Wednesday. The FCNR initiative is particularly significant in the context of India's economic landscape, as it represents a strategic approach to enhancing the country’s foreign currency reserves and stabilising the Indian Rupee amidst global economic uncertainties.
The Foreign Currency Non-Resident (FCNR) scheme allows NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) to safely deposit and grow their overseas earnings in major foreign currencies within Indian banks. This initiative is designed to cater to the unique financial needs of the Indian diaspora, enabling them to invest in India while retaining their funds in foreign currencies. These deposits operate similarly to traditional fixed deposits, except that the money remains in foreign currency rather than being converted to Indian Rupees. This feature is particularly appealing to NRIs as it mitigates the risk associated with currency fluctuations.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has permitted banks to offer higher interest rates on FCNR deposits for a limited period as part of the strategy to bolster forex reserves and support the rupee amid the West Asia crisis. The decision to enhance interest rates is a calculated move aimed at attracting more foreign currency deposits, which are crucial for maintaining the stability of the Indian economy and ensuring that the country has sufficient reserves to meet its international obligations.
As noted by ICAI Singapore Chapter Chairman Sanjay Gattani, "As much as USD 10 billion has been raised so far under the FCNR initiative, which is open till September 30, 2026." This timeframe provides NRIs with a substantial window to consider their investment options and contribute to India's economic growth. Gattani further emphasized that under the FCNR initiative, NRIs have the potential to generate USD 70-80 billion foreign currency inflows into India, which could significantly enhance the country’s external financial position while providing NRIs with an opportunity to contribute directly to the nation's development.
The webinar, held on July 15, drew nearly 1,800 participants, including chartered accountants, NRIs, accredited investors, business leaders, family offices, and finance professionals from across the world. This level of engagement highlights the keen interest among the Indian diaspora in exploring investment opportunities in India, particularly in light of the attractive interest rates being offered under the FCNR scheme.
Gattani noted that considering the investment capacity of participants and the leverage available through FCNR deposits, the webinar alone had the potential to facilitate investment commitments of over USD 2 billion. This figure illustrates the significant financial resources that NRIs are willing to mobilize for investment in India, reflecting their confidence in the country's economic prospects.
“This is a testament to the trust that the global Indian community continues to place in India's economic future and the power of well-curated knowledge initiatives in mobilising meaningful capital,” he said. The trust and confidence exhibited by NRIs are crucial for India's growth trajectory, especially in a global economy that is increasingly interconnected and competitive.
The webinar aimed to familiarise overseas Indians with the recently announced FCNR opportunity and its potential benefits for both investors and the Indian economy. In addition to providing insights into the FCNR framework, the event also served as a platform for discussing the broader implications of NRIs' investments in India. It is essential to understand that these investments not only support individual financial goals but also contribute to the overall development of the Indian economy.
Senior representatives from HDFC Bank, HSBC, and State Bank of India explained the FCNR framework, investment process, regulatory requirements, taxation aspects, and the advantages available to NRIs. This comprehensive approach ensured that participants left the session with a clear understanding of how to navigate the investment landscape effectively.
ICAI Singapore Chapter Vice-Chairman Kushal Jaju stated that the interactive session addressed a wide range of investor queries, helping participants better understand the practical aspects of investing under the scheme. This engagement is vital as it empowers NRIs with the knowledge needed to make informed investment decisions, thereby enhancing their participation in the Indian economy.
Gattani emphasized that a recurring theme during the discussions was that the current FCNR initiative represents a "once-in-a-generation opportunity" for the Indian diaspora to participate in India's growth while benefiting from an attractive investment avenue. This sentiment resonates strongly within the community, especially given the current global economic climate and the potential for significant returns on investment.
The speakers highlighted how the initiative has the potential to strengthen India's foreign exchange reserves, support macroeconomic stability, and reinforce investor confidence in the Indian economy. As NRIs consider their investment options, it is crucial to recognize that their contributions can lead to long-term benefits not only for themselves but also for the broader Indian economy. The inflow of foreign currency can help bolster India's balance of payments, reduce the current account deficit, and enhance the overall economic stability of the nation.
In conclusion, the FCNR initiative offers a unique opportunity for NRIs to invest in India while benefiting from favorable interest rates and retaining their funds in foreign currencies. As the Indian economy continues to evolve and adapt to global challenges, the active participation of NRIs will be instrumental in driving growth and development. The ongoing discussions and initiatives aimed at promoting the FCNR scheme are essential steps in fostering a robust investment environment that encourages the Indian diaspora to play a pivotal role in the country's economic future.
