AbduRahman Hussein Khamis: My name is Abdurahman Hussein, and I am a contemporary artist from Mombasa, Kenya.
My practice is rooted in storytelling, drawing inspiration from culture, identity, memory, and everyday experiences. Through my work, I explore themes that encourage reflection, spark meaningful conversations, and create connections across different communities and perspectives.
AbduRahman Hussein Khamis: I moved to Qatar in January 2021, and in that same month, I joined the security team at the National Museum of Qatar (NMoQ). What began as a job soon became a source of creative inspiration.
Every day, being surrounded by the museum's rich history, culture, and powerful storytelling has deeply influenced my artistic journey. Walking through its galleries has broadened my perspective, inspired new ideas, and encouraged me to explore deeper narratives in my own work.
The museum has taught me to look beyond aesthetics and think more deeply about storytelling and the meaning behind every piece of art. It has encouraged me to create work that not only reflects my own experiences but also resonates with people from different cultures and backgrounds.
Since arriving in Qatar, the country and the museum have played a significant role in my growth, both personally and as an artist. In many ways, NMoQ has become both a workplace and a source of inspiration that continues to shape me as an artist.
AbduRahman Hussein Khamis: My interest in art began at a young age. I was always fascinated by drawing and the ability to express ideas visually. As I grew older, that curiosity developed into a deep passion, and I found myself constantly exploring new ways to tell stories through art.
Creating became more than just a hobby; it became my way of expressing emotions, documenting experiences, and making sense of the world around me.
Over the years, my practice has continued to evolve through observation, learning, and lived experiences. Every artwork is an opportunity to communicate something meaningful, start conversations, and connect with people on a deeper level. Today, art is not just what I do; it is an essential part of who I am.
AbduRahman Hussein Khamis: My journey was truly motivated by Qatar Museums CEO Mohammed Saad Al Rumaihi. Back in early 2023, I was just painting for fun, but one day I came across his profile picture on Instagram and was so inspired that I decided to paint a portrait based on it.
As I work at the National Museum's VIP entrance, I often open for VIP visitors, including him. So, one day, as he was leaving, I opened the barrier, and I presented the painting to him. He was so surprised he got out of his car, looked closely, and even took a moment to ask me why I hadn’t signed it. He gave me his pen, and that was a turning point.
A few days later, he invited me to his office, and that conversation completely changed my perspective. From then on, I began to take my art seriously and focus on my growth as an artist.
Additionally, one of my greatest lessons has been understanding that growth takes time. Every challenge, every late night, and every setback have shaped me both as an artist and as a person. I've learned to trust the process, remain consistent, and embrace every stage of the journey, knowing that each experience contributes to the artist I continue to become.
AbduRahman Hussein Khamis: I create contemporary figurative realist paintings inspired by my own life.
Every work is based on a real experience, exploring themes of labour, faith, perseverance, and the quiet moments between duty and becoming.
AbduRahman Hussein Khamis: Balancing work and art requires, and still requires a lot of discipline, sacrifice, commitment and passion.
I made the most of every opportunity, working on my art during breaks, between shifts, and after my regular working hours. There were many nights when I stayed late or worked through the night just to complete a piece.
It wasn't always easy, but my passion for art kept me motivated. Rather than seeing work and art as separate, I allowed each to inspire the other, making every spare moment count toward my creative journey.
AbduRahman Hussein Khamis: Hosting my own exhibition was one of the most fulfilling experiences of my artistic journey. It was the culmination of years of hard work, sacrifice, and belief in my vision. Seeing people engage with the stories behind my work, interpret the pieces in their own way, and connect with them emotionally was incredibly rewarding.
What made the experience even more special was the overwhelming support and turnout. Seeing so many people show up, take time to engage with the work, and celebrate the journey with me was humbling in the best way possible.
More than just showcasing my art, the exhibition reaffirmed that creativity has the power to bring people together, spark meaningful conversations, and inspire different perspectives. It was a milestone that encouraged me to keep creating and pushing my practice further.
AbduRahman Hussein Khamis: Yes, there are a few exciting projects currently in the works. While I can't share all the details just yet, I am preparing for future exhibitions and collaborations that continue to explore new ideas and push my artistic practice forward.
I'm excited to reveal more at the right time and look forward to creating new experiences, meaningful conversations, opportunities and most importantly, art.
AbduRahman Hussein Khamis: I hope to share my art with a global audience while staying true to my roots and the stories that inspire my work. My goal is to continue creating meaningful pieces, exhibit in different parts of the world, collaborate with institutions and fellow artists, and use art as a bridge between cultures.
More than anything, I want my work to leave a lasting impact, creating conversations, inspiring people, and reminding them of the power of storytelling through art.
AbduRahman Hussein Khamis: My advice to aspiring artists in Qatar is to stay authentic, be patient, and trust your journey. Don't wait for the perfect opportunity; create consistently with whatever resources you have and let your work speak for itself.
One thing I always encourage artists to do is document their work. Take good photographs of every piece you create and keep a record of your artistic journey. Over time, you'll see your growth, build a strong portfolio, and have your work ready for exhibitions, opportunities, and collaborations.
Qatar has a vibrant and growing arts scene with incredible institutions, exhibitions, and creative communities. Take advantage of these opportunities, keep learning, build meaningful connections, and never stop refining your craft.
Most importantly, remember that success doesn't happen overnight. Stay committed, remain curious, and allow your passion to guide you. Your unique perspective is your greatest strength.
