MUMBAI, July 11: After four weeks of gains, Indian equity benchmarks faced a mild loss due to rising tensions in West Asia, impacting crude prices.

After rallying for four consecutive weeks, the Indian equity benchmarks posted a mild weekly loss, as escalating tensions in West Asia sent crude prices higher. This week marked a notable shift in investor sentiment, as geopolitical developments often have significant implications for market behavior and economic forecasts. The market's response to these tensions highlights the interconnectedness of global events and local economic conditions.

Nifty lost 0.26 percent during the week and edged up 1.02 percent on the last trading day to reach 24,206. At close, Sensex was up 827 points, or 1.08 percent, at 77,569. It lost 0.25 percent during the week. Such fluctuations in the indices reflect the market's sensitivity to external factors, particularly those that can affect oil prices, which in turn influence inflation and economic growth. The Indian economy, being one of the largest consumers of oil in the world, is particularly vulnerable to changes in crude oil prices, making the equity market's performance closely tied to global oil market dynamics.

Indian equities experienced a volatile week, with early optimism giving way to a sharp bout of risk aversion due to geopolitical tensions. The backdrop of increased military activity in West Asia, particularly involving nations like Iran and Israel, has historically led to spikes in crude oil prices, which can impact the Indian economy due to its reliance on oil imports. When crude prices rise, the cost of transportation and goods increases, leading to inflationary pressures that can dampen consumer spending and corporate profits. The Indian government has been taking steps to mitigate the impact of rising oil prices, including diversifying energy sources and exploring renewable energy options, but the immediate effects of geopolitical tensions continue to pose challenges.

Investor sentiment weakened after fresh military strikes and concerns over the progress of the US–Iran peace negotiations triggered a risk-off mood across global markets. The potential for conflict in the region raises fears of supply disruptions, which can exacerbate existing inflationary trends. As investors reacted to these developments, many chose to retreat to safer assets, creating a ripple effect across various markets worldwide. This behavior is indicative of a broader trend where investors often prioritize capital preservation in times of geopolitical uncertainty, leading to increased volatility in equity markets.

“However, the sell-off proved to be short-lived, as investor sentiment improved markedly following encouraging Q1 FY27 business updates from the banking and IT sectors, which provided a constructive backdrop for the upcoming earnings season,” an analyst said. Positive earnings reports can often serve as a counterbalance to geopolitical fears, reinforcing the notion that domestic economic fundamentals remain strong despite external uncertainties. The banking sector, in particular, is seen as a bellwether for economic health, as it reflects consumer and business confidence through lending practices and credit growth.

Indian equities gradually recovered in the latter half of the week as crude oil prices declined from nearly $76 per barrel to the $71–72 range, global technology stocks rebounded, and optimism surrounding the ongoing diplomatic discussions helped improve overall market sentiment. The decline in crude prices is particularly significant for India, a major importer of oil, as it can alleviate some inflationary pressures and improve the trade balance. Analysts have noted that lower oil prices can also provide the government with more room to maneuver fiscal policy, potentially leading to increased public spending and investment in infrastructure projects.

Sustained earnings outperformance in Q1FY27 is likely to reinforce confidence in the FY27 corporate earnings outlook which could help catalyse a recovery in FII inflows, they said. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net buyers through most of the trading sessions, ending the week with net inflows of approximately Rs 4,670 crore. The presence of FIIs is crucial for the Indian markets as they bring in capital, enhance liquidity, and can influence market trends significantly. The inflow of foreign capital is often viewed as a vote of confidence in the Indian economy, and sustained FII interest can support market stability and growth.

On the sectoral front, real estate, consumer durables, and IT outperformed, whereas media, FMCG, and chemicals lagged. This sectoral divergence highlights the varying performance of industries based on consumer demand, economic conditions, and international market trends. Mid and small-cap segments outperformed the broader market, supported by gains in realty, consumer durables, and metal stocks. This trend indicates a growing investor appetite for smaller companies, which may be seen as having higher growth potential compared to their larger counterparts. The performance of mid and small-cap stocks can often signal a broader recovery in investor sentiment, as these stocks typically attract risk-tolerant investors seeking higher returns.

Broad market indices showed divergence with benchmark indices, as Nifty Midcap100 added 1.36 percent, while Nifty Smallcap100 rallied 1.26 percent during the week. Such performance often signals a shift in investor strategy, where there is a growing preference for riskier assets in the hunt for higher returns, particularly in a volatile market environment. This shift can also reflect a broader expectation of economic recovery, as investors become more optimistic about growth prospects.

Immediate resistance levels for Nifty are placed at the 24,300 level and the 24,100 level is expected to provide immediate support, followed by the 24,000 level. Technical analysis plays a critical role in short-term trading strategies, as investors look for signs of market direction and potential reversals. Also, immediate support for Bank Nifty is placed in the 57,800–57,700 zone, while resistance is seen at 58,200–58,300 zone. The banking sector's performance is often viewed as a barometer for the overall economy, given its role in credit provision and financial intermediation. The relationship between banking sector performance and economic growth is critical, as banks facilitate investment and consumption through lending.

Investors remain keen on Q1FY27 earnings and the domestic inflation print, US core inflation data, and commentary from Federal Reserve officials. These economic indicators are pivotal in shaping investor expectations and market dynamics. “Despite the hawkish tone of the recent FOMC meeting, easing inflationary pressures and slowing growth across the US, the EU, and China have strengthened expectations of a more accommodative monetary policy stance,” a market participant said. The interplay between domestic and international monetary policy can significantly influence capital flows, currency valuations, and overall market sentiment. A more accommodative stance from central banks can lead to increased liquidity in the markets, potentially boosting equity prices.

As the situation in West Asia continues to evolve, investors will likely remain vigilant, monitoring developments closely. The implications of geopolitical tensions extend beyond immediate market reactions, influencing long-term investment strategies and economic forecasts. In this context, the resilience of the Indian equity market, bolstered by strong corporate earnings and FII inflows, will be critical in navigating the uncertainties posed by global events. The ability of the Indian economy to withstand external shocks while maintaining growth will be a focal point for investors, and ongoing geopolitical developments will continue to shape market sentiment in the foreseeable future.
